Is Your Air Conditioner Running But Not Cooling?

Is Your Air Conditioner Running But Not Cooling?

April in Southern California can sometimes mean hot temperatures during the day, and cooler temperatures during the night.

If you turned on your AC for the first time in months, you may likely have found that it’s running but not cooling your home.

Here are some of the reasons why this happens:

Thermostat Issues

One of the most common reasons why an air conditioner is running, but the house is not cooling, is due to incorrect settings on the thermostat.

Make sure that your thermostat is set to ON and COOL because, if it’s just set to ON, your thermostat will only recirculate the air in your home without actually cooling it down.

Breaker Issues

If your air conditioner is set to ON but you realize that it’s still not running, it’s likely that one of the breakers was recently tripped and needs to be reset.

All you have to do is find the breaker panel in your home, locate the breakers for your air conditioner and flip them on/off again. If the breaker is the issue, this should cause your air conditioner to immediately start running again.

HVAC Air Filter Issue

Another common reason why an air conditioner doesn’t cool a home, even when it’s running, is due to a clogged HVAC filter.

Your HVAC air filter should be changed at least every two months to ensure that it’s in excellent condition and able to handle heavy use.

Besides the tips in this article, some of the other reasons why your A/C isn’t cooling your home could be due to dirt and debris clogging your outdoor unit, leaking refrigerant, leaky ductwork, or a possible mechanical issue that should be addressed.
